The Dodgers Turned Yasiel Puig, Matt Kemp and Alex Wood Into Mookie Betts, Max Scherzer and Trea Turner
It really sucks watching the rich get richer. And in the case of the los Angeles Dodgers, it's the richest getting richer, as one of the already best teams in baseball picked up arguably the greatest pitcher of a generation AND an All-Star shortstop with a career .842 OPS. Life is not fair. But when you go back just a few years and see who the Dodgers gave up to make not only this deal possible, but the Mookie Betts trade as well, you'll get sick to your stomach.
In a trade with the Cincinnati Reds for Yasiel Puig, Alex Wood and the corpse of Matt Kemp, Los Angeles received prospects Jeter Downs — who it used in a package to acquire Betts — and Josiah Gray — who is included in the return going to the Nationals for Scherzer and Turner. So while there were a couple other prospects involved in both trades, Los Angeles damn near flipped two washed hitters and a decent starter for an MVP, a three-time Cy Young winner and one of the best shortstops in Major League Baseball.
And all this comes the year after the Dodgers won the World Series. I would give my left testicle to have a front office for any of the teams I like put together a team capable of winning a championship and then still feel the need to substantially upgrade it the following year. What a feeling that must be.
The NL West race just got that much more interesting.
